Uncle Convicted of Nephew's Murder Due to 'Possession' Claims, Sentenced to Life Imprisonment by Cambodian High Court

The Phnom Penh High Court on July 15, 2026, opened a hearing on the appeal of a man convicted of the brutal murder of his biological niece. The Phnom Penh Municipal Court had previously sentenced the accused to life imprisonment for this heinous crime. Presiding Judge Pol Samoeun stated that the accused, identified as Hang Rothna, also known as "Barang," a 34-year-old male PassApp driver, was sentenced by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on December 30, 2025, to life imprisonment for premeditated murder under Article 200 of the Penal Code. Recalling the incident, on July 1, 2025, at approximately 1:00 PM, in Village 15, Sangkat Srah Chak, Khan Daun Penh, Phnom Penh, the perpetrator brought an altar from upstairs to the backyard, played Siem music, and lit incense. Immediately afterward, the perpetrator went back upstairs and attacked his biological niece, who was about 10 years old. The child's mother, who followed her upstairs, was also attacked and sustained minor injuries. The perpetrator then proceeded to stab himself with a "Bong T'o" knife and further struck his head with an axe before jumping from the backyard in an attempt to kill himself. However, he survived but sustained severe injuries. During the hearing, the accused defended his actions by claiming that "a spirit had possessed him." However, the Phnom Penh High Court has not immediately announced its verdict, pending further review and the official announcement of the results at a later date.
