Thai Civil Society Groups Urge Review of EU FTA Talks Amid Concerns Over Liquor Imports and Seed Monopolies

Eleven civil society organizations in Chiang Mai, a major city in northern Thailand, have voiced concerns regarding the ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between Thailand and the European Union (EU). These groups are strongly urging the government to review the negotiation details. Specifically, the organizations are worried about the potential influx of inexpensive imported foreign liquors from the EU into the Thai market, which could negatively impact the domestic liquor industry. Furthermore, they highlight the risk of the EU gaining monopolistic rights over agricultural seeds, potentially disadvantaging Thailand's agricultural sector, particularly small-scale farmers. This issue could also affect Thailand's long-established agricultural diversity and food security, prompting the groups to sound an alarm.
