Cambodia Pursues Aviation Modernization and Regional Connectivity Amid Tourism Dip

PHNOM PENH, Sept. 4, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is set to advance aviation modernization, digital transformation, and stronger regional air connectivity as it joins aviation leaders from across the Asia-Pacific at the 61st Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation (DGCA/61) in Kuala Lumpur, officials announced Thursday. Dr. Mao Havannall, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), will lead Cambodia’s delegation to the conference, scheduled for Sept. 7–11 under the theme “Smart Skies: Emerging Technologies for Safe, Secure, Sustainable and Efficient Aviation.” The meeting is convened by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The summit will focus on emerging aviation trends, advanced technologies, and innovative solutions aimed at improving safety, security, sustainability, and efficiency. For Cambodia, participation reflects the Royal Government’s commitment to strengthening regional aviation cooperation and promoting ICAO standards and recommended practices. Officials stated that Cambodia will continue its efforts to improve aviation safety and security, accelerate digital transformation, adopt modern technologies, and support sustainable sector development. The conference will also provide opportunities to exchange views and best practices with aviation leaders and experts from across the Asia-Pacific. Cambodia’s participation comes as the country reported nearly 2 million international tourist arrivals in the first seven months of 2026, a decline of 46 percent compared to the same period last year. Chinese and Vietnamese visitors accounted for the largest shares, while arrivals from Thailand collapsed due to border closures and military tensions. The Ministry of Tourism attributed the downturn to regional instability and global economic uncertainty, but stressed that aviation modernization and expanded connectivity are critical to recovery. Officials highlighted ongoing campaigns to promote Cambodia as a safe and competitive destination, including joint promotions with international airlines and tourism boards. By joining the DGCA/61 summit, Cambodia aims to reaffirm its commitment to regional cooperation, demonstrate progress in aviation modernization, and position itself as a competitive hub in the Asia-Pacific aviation market, while linking aviation reforms to the recovery of its tourism sector.
