Indonesia Urges Stronger ASEAN Semiconductor Ecosystem

Indonesia is strongly advocating for the strengthening of a semiconductor ecosystem within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to enhance regional economic autonomy and competitiveness. This initiative aims to address the vulnerabilities in the global semiconductor supply chain and boost technological development and production capacity within the region. The Indonesian government emphasizes the importance of ASEAN countries collaborating to build a semiconductor value chain, increasing self-sufficiency from raw material procurement to design, manufacturing, and final products. This is expected to reduce reliance on specific countries and establish a resilient economic foundation against geopolitical risks. Recent global events, including geopolitical tensions and the pandemic, have exposed the fragility of semiconductor supply networks, significantly impacting the world economy. Indonesia believes that ASEAN should play a more substantial role in this critical industry and has indicated its intention to promote joint investments, technology transfer, and human resource development within the bloc. This proposal is viewed as a strategic step for ASEAN to transform from merely a production hub into a center for high-value technological development and innovation.
