Airport Rail Link Operates at Hourly Intervals Due to Turntable Malfunction

The Airport Rail Link (ARL) connecting Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Thailand’s main gateway, with central Bangkok is experiencing significant service disruptions due to a technical issue with its railway turntable at the depot. SRT Electrified Train Co (SRTET), the operator, announced on Wednesday morning that the malfunction has reduced the service to a single operational train running at one-hour intervals, a stark contrast to its usual frequency of every 10-15 minutes. The unexpected breakdown has caused considerable inconvenience to passengers, with crowds accumulating at stations including Phaya Thai, Makkasan, Hua Mak, and Lat Krabang. SRTET has stated that passengers facing journey delays exceeding 90 minutes may apply for a fine waiver. Furthermore, the EMV payment system, which accepts credit and debit cards, is also non-operational, requiring passengers to purchase tokens at the stations. SRTET, which falls under the supervision of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), has apologized for the problem and recommended travelers utilize alternative transport options such as SRT trains or Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) public buses operating between Makkasan Railway Station and Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan province. Pichet Kunadhamraks, director-general of the Department of Rail Transport, confirmed that the problem began at 2:30 AM on Wednesday and has requested a swift resolution. This incident highlights potential vulnerabilities in Bangkok's urban transport infrastructure, particularly concerning airport access, and underscores the importance of robust maintenance and upgrade strategies for critical systems.
