Driver in Fatal Hit-and-Run Surrenders to Authorities

Phnom Penh Municipal Police Headquarters received the suspect, Ms. Sam Meichu, who was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident, on the afternoon of July 30, 2026. She is accused of hitting and killing a man on Road 1003, Khmumnyun Commune, Sen Sok District, Phnom Penh, around midnight on July 28. The victim was an official from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. Video clips and photographs from the scene indicate that there were two young women in the vehicle, an "AVATR 11," driven by the suspect at the time of the incident. Lieutenant General Choun Narinth expressed gratitude to the family of Ms. Sam Meichu, particularly her father, Oknha, for cooperating with the investigation and handing over their daughter to the traffic police. He stated that legal proceedings will be carried out according to the law. This incident highlights the pressing issue of traffic safety in Cambodia, particularly the eradication of drunk driving. The government is urged to call on citizens to comply with traffic laws and to strengthen measures to prevent accidents.
