Cambodia Hosts Regional Forum on Combating Fake News, Highlights China Cooperation
Cambodia hosted a regional forum on combating fake news, emphasizing cooperation with China. The forum, part of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation framework, aims to strengthen regional media collaboration and enhance information credibility. Discussions specifically addressed the impact of AI advancements on the spread of disinformation.
The Cambodian government, through the Ministry of Information, hosted a regional forum on combating fake news. Held on September 17th as part of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation framework, the event brought together journalists and content creators from China, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The objective is to build a responsible media network, enhance public trust in accurate information sources, and strengthen societal resilience against disinformation. Minister of Information Net Pheaktra stated, "Today's forum represents a further step in our journey, moving from dialogue to concrete cooperation, from response to prevention, and from isolated initiatives to collective and strengthened resilience." He also highlighted the announcement of the 2026 Fake News Content Creator Award as a significant part of the forum. The minister emphasized that while the rapid advancements in digital technology, social media, and AI offer numerous opportunities for development, innovation, education, public participation, and knowledge sharing, they also create new challenges. Disinformation and misleading information can spread across borders in mere seconds, using different languages and networks. Fabricated images, videos, and audio can reach millions before verification, and rumors tend to proliferate during crises. The use of Generative AI, synthetic media, and deepfake technology makes distinguishing between real and fake content increasingly difficult. Jiang Nan, Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia, stated that China actively supports combating fake news through the special fund of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation. The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia is also firmly committed to fighting fake news. He addressed past online rumors alleging a "downturn" in China-Cambodia relations and "obstruction" of cooperation projects, asserting the embassy's resolve to counter such disinformation. The media forum and the 2026 award competition are themed "Combating Fake News and Promoting Information Integrity in the Mekong-Lancang Region." This initiative signifies Cambodia's transition from policy discussions to practical implementation, from identifying challenges to promoting solutions, and from awareness to broader engagement.
