Hanoi Develops Large Regulating Ponds Combined with Parks to Enhance Urban Greenery

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, is undertaking a large-scale project to develop three regulating ponds integrated with parks along a 2km stretch of To Huu Street, from the Trung Thư intersection to the Khuất Duy Tiến-Lê Văn Lương intersection. This initiative aims to supplement essential green spaces in the urban area and improve the local landscape and environment. In recent years, Hanoi has faced increasing flood risks due to the impacts of climate change, particularly heavy rainfall. In this context, regulating ponds play a crucial role in temporarily storing rainwater, thereby reducing the burden on the sewage system. The article suggests that the Cự Khối regulating pond is ready for water storage when needed, and the Yên Nghĩa regulating pond is contributing to the improvement of the capital's drainage infrastructure. Vietnam is experiencing rapid economic growth and urbanization. However, infrastructure development, especially flood control in urban areas, remains an urgent challenge. The Vietnamese Communist Party government, under its one-party system, aims to improve the quality of citizens' lives while balancing development and environmental conservation. The development of such regulating pond parks is expected to have multifaceted effects, not only serving as flood control measures but also providing recreational spaces for citizens and enhancing the city's appeal. In its relations with China, while Vietnam has a high degree of economic dependence, it maintains a cautious geopolitical stance, prioritizing its own security and national interests in its foreign policy. Domestic infrastructure investment is seen as supporting economic growth, strengthening the living foundations of its citizens, and contributing to social stability.
