Laos Explores Strengthening Ties Through ASEAN-China Media Exchange

A delegation of media representatives from Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states, including Laos, has undertaken a visit aimed at strengthening media cooperation with China. This visit, part of the ASEAN-China Centre's (ACC) 'Open Day' initiative, seeks to promote dialogue and exchanges between the two regions. Secretary-General Zhang Lizhong of the ASEAN-China Centre highlighted the long-standing contributions of media professionals in building mutual understanding and people-to-people ties, describing media cooperation as a crucial component of the ASEAN-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The year 2026 holds particular significance for ASEAN-China relations, marking the 35th anniversary of dialogue relations, the fifth anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and the 15th anniversary of the ACC. Zhang noted that over the past decades, cooperation between ASEAN and China has expanded across political, economic, and social spheres. Economic and trade ties have deepened, while collaboration in emerging fields such as the digital economy, green development, and artificial intelligence has gained momentum. The ACC has been working to strengthen cooperation in policy communication, trade and investment, education, culture, tourism, and media. The visiting media delegation had the opportunity to experience China firsthand and explore new ways of communicating stories of ASEAN-China cooperation. Quoting an ancient Chinese saying, "good friends feel close even when they are thousands of miles apart," Zhang expressed hope that journalists would use their perspectives and storytelling skills to deepen people-to-people understanding and bring fresh momentum to ASEAN-China relations. Separately, the Lao PDR has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ASEAN labor cooperation to promote decent employment, protect workers' rights, and expand opportunities for people to develop skills and secure better livelihoods, reflecting Laos's pursuit of economic development and improved living standards for its citizens.
