Cambodia Strengthens Water Resource Management Amid Climate Change Concerns

Cambodia is intensifying its efforts in water resource management in the face of increasing uncertainties and risks associated with climate change, including floods, droughts, and altered rainfall patterns. The recognition of rainwater as a valuable natural resource that must be effectively captured, stored, conserved, and sustainably managed is crucial for supporting agriculture, food security, and resilient communities. On the morning of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, H.E. Thor Cheaththa, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, presided over the opening ceremony of the 4th International Conference of the International Water Association (IWA). The conference, themed "Rainwater for Tomorrow: Water, Climate, and Culture," was co-organized by the Royal Academy of Cambodia and experts from Seoul National University (SNU) at the Khemarak Puthisa Hall of the Royal Academy of Cambodia. H.E. Minister Thor Cheaththa emphasized that the 7th legislature government, under the wise leadership of Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Hun Manet, regards water as "white gold" and a significant driving force for national development. Water has been designated as one of the five priority sectors in the first phase of the Pentagonal Strategy, supporting Cambodia's development towards achieving its 2030 and 2050 visions. Furthermore, H.E. Minister expressed support for initiatives such as "Rainwater Schools" and "Khmer Rain Day," which can help foster a stronger water management culture among youth and society as a whole. He highlighted the importance of building an integrated, smart, and climate-resilient water management system, particularly transforming seasonal rainwater challenges into strategic resources for water security, food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development. H.E. Minister firmly believes that this international conference will transcend knowledge exchange and lead to concrete actions, stronger partnerships, and practical solutions for Cambodia, the Mekong region, and beyond. It will also provide a significant opportunity to strengthen shared visions and international cooperation on rainwater management, water security, and climate resilience.
