Thailand and Indonesia to Boost Trade to US$23 Billion by 2030

By Thai Newsroom and Naewna newspaper THAI Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Indonesian President Prabowo Subinanto agreed to increase bilateral trade to the value of US$23 billion by 2030 during the former’s two-day visit that ended today (Aug. 4) with this being the first visit to Indonesia by a Thai premier in 15 years. Ms. Rachada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said the Indonesian government gave the Thai Prime Minister a most honourable welcome, with the Indonesian President personally seeing him off at the airport with this reflecting close friendship and trust between the leaders, which will facilitate rapid and effective coordination and cooperation between the two countries. During the visit, the two leaders held talks to strengthen the Thailand-Indonesia Strategic Partnership. They agreed to create new economic opportunities and expand agricultural trade to enhance food security and halal industries, while increasing bilateral trade value to US$23 billion by 2030. This cooperation will open up markets for Thai goods and services, providing opportunities for entrepreneurs, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to access the large Indonesian market. Simultaneously, it will attract investment, create economic activity, and increase employment opportunities in both countries. As for security, the two countries agreed to deepen cooperation in combating transnational crimes, particularly online scams, human trafficking, and illicit drug trafficking, and to increase intelligence information sharing, as well as closer collaboration between law enforcement agencies. On the subject of tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and TransNusa Airline signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch direct flights on the Bangkok-Jakarta and the Phuket-Bali routes. The initiative is expected to facilitate travel, stimulate the tourism economy, and strengthen people-to-people ties. In addition, Anutin and Subianto witnessed the signing of the Thailand-Indonesia Strategic Partnership Action Plan and the MoU on education. These agreements aim to promote exchanges of students, personnel, and knowledge, laying a stronger foundation for closer cooperation between Thailand and Indonesia in years ahead. Regarding the situation in Myanmar, Anutin reiterated Thailand’s support for resolving the issue according to Asean’s five-point consensus, and its commitment to acting as a constructive neighbour, promoting dialogue among all parties, providing humanitarian assistance, and coordinating cooperation with Asean member states to restore peace and stability to Myanmar.
