Cambodia Thanks UN Special Rapporteur for Highlighting Plight of Displaced Citizens Amidst Thai Border Issues
Cambodia's Ministry of Interior has expressed gratitude to UN Special Rapporteur Tom Andrews for his statement highlighting the plight of over 650,000 Cambodian citizens displaced by alleged Thai military incursions and human rights violations. The report noted over 20,000 remain unable to return home, facing severe economic and social hardships.
The Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Cambodia has expressed its gratitude to Mr. Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, for his attention and statement concerning the hardships faced by over 650,000 Cambodian citizens displaced due to alleged aggressive actions and severe human rights violations by the Thai army. Specifically, more than 20,000 citizens have been unable to return to their homes as Thai troops reportedly destroyed their residences and occupied their land and villages, even after a ceasefire took effect. In a press release on the situation of displaced citizens and the impact on Cambodian civilian areas as of the morning of August 2, 2026, the Ministry of Interior noted that the Special Rapporteur directly addressed the severe economic and social impacts accompanying the displacement crisis. Citizens residing in temporary locations have lost jobs and property, facing significant difficulties in supporting their families. The press release further asserted that since the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand came into effect on December 27, 2025, the Thai side has not fully implemented the joint declaration from the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC). In this context, the Ministry stated it continues to record all disloyal actions by the Thai side while maintaining focus on resolving the impacts on citizens and civilian areas resulting from the aggression, particularly for those unable to return home. Through its press release, the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Cambodia appealed to all Cambodian nationals, both within the country and abroad, to unite in supporting Prime Minister Hun Manet, who is leading the mission to resolve border issues with the Thai side peacefully, through diplomatic mechanisms and international law, aiming to restore sovereignty, territorial integrity, peace, and stability along the border line, and particularly the normal livelihoods of the people on both sides.
