Cambodia Holds Memorial Service for Fallen Veteran, Reaffirms Support for Families

A memorial service was held on the afternoon of August 31, 2026, at the "Techo Dibel Morotok" Veteran Development Center in Kraya village, Santuk district, Kampong Cham province, for former soldier Iet Kau, 58, who died of illness on August 30, 2026. Mr. Kau was a disabled veteran who sustained injuries from shrapnel during a battle in the Popok front in Stueng Trang district, Kampong.); The ceremony was presided over by Major General Som Sun, Deputy Commander of the Kampong Cham Provincial Military Operations Area and Standing Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Cambodian Veterans and Retirees Association of Kampong Cham Province. Lieutenant Colonel Noun Sitha, Secretary of the Provincial Veterans and Retirees Association, read a condolence message from Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Veterans and Retirees Association. The message highlighted Mr. Kau's service in the army in 1986 as part of Division 2. He was later recognized as a disabled soldier by the Ministry of National Defense in 2002. Mr. Kau is survived by his wife, Yin Phalla, 53, and five children and grandchildren. Previously, Mr. Kau, who lacked land and housing, was provided with one hectare of land and a house by Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Samdech Kittiprittbandit Bun Rany Hun Sen, along with provincial authorities and the Kampong Cham Provincial Veterans and Retirees Association, through HE General Kun Kim, Standing Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Cambodian Veterans and Retirees Association. Major General Som Sun expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Mr. Iet Kau, a veteran who had contributed to the nation. He also prayed for the repose of his soul. He noted that currently, 241 houses accommodating 269 families, totaling 754 members (375 female), reside at the Techo Dibel Morotok Veteran Development Center. Among them, 22 veterans have passed away due to chronic illnesses and recurring injuries. During the occasion, Major General Som Sun and his colleagues presented 4 million Riel (approximately $1,000 USD) from the Cambodian Veterans and Retirees Association's mortuary fund, along with humanitarian aid from HE Dr. Hun Manet and his wife, to the bereaved family.
