Cambodia Strengthens Drug Control Efforts with Religious Sector in Preah Sihanouk

A seminar aimed at promoting understanding of the harmful effects of drug abuse and the drug control law within the religious sector was held in Preah Sihanouk province, a major port city in southern Cambodia. On the afternoon of Saturday, September 5, 2026, His Excellency Say Sam Al, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, and head of the government working group stationed in Preah Sihanouk province, presided over the closing ceremony of the seminar. The seminar, which focused on raising awareness about the impacts of drug use and the Law on Drug Control, was attended by over 500 participants at the Mongkol Sethachant Center, located in Village 6, Sangkat 4, Preah Sihanouk City. In his closing remarks, HE Say Sam Al emphasized that religion and interfaith dialogue have contributed significantly to social work alongside the government. He noted that Cambodia is a society where citizens practice various religions, including Buddhism, recognized by the government, as well as Islam and Christianity with numerous denominations. The government upholds religious freedom and non-discrimination, recognizing that each religion possesses similar values despite different sects. He further stated that the belief of Cambodian people in Buddhism is invaluable in contributing to national development, particularly concerning nutrition and food security for healthy growth, especially in children. Regarding education, he mentioned the importance of research through the internet and digital platforms, and highlighted AI as a modern technology that can greatly facilitate work. He added that all religions can help increase public awareness, and religious institutions serve as exemplary bodies that cooperate with the government to ensure political stability and peace throughout the country. HE Say Sam Al continued by saying that all religions are good, but it is humans who cause division, conflict, and even war.
