Four suspects arrested in 'Fake Thai Father' scheme to illegally obtain Thai nationality for foreign children

Four suspects have been arrested in Bangkok for their alleged involvement in a 'Fake Thai Father' scheme, a fraudulent operation designed to illegally secure Thai nationality for Chinese children. The suspects were transferred to the criminal court on Ratchadaphisek Road on July 25th. The arrested individuals include two Thai men, identified as Mongkol and Woramet, who allegedly acted as the 'fake Thai fathers,' and two Chinese parents, Ms. Xi and Mr. Hu. During their transfer to the vehicle, all suspects kept their heads down and refused to answer questions from the media. Initial investigations revealed that the Chinese parents and Mr. Mongkol have confessed to the charges. However, Mr. Woramet has denied involvement, claiming a relationship with the Chinese woman and paternity of the child. Scientific evidence, including DNA test results, has conclusively shown a mismatch, confirming that Mr. Woramet is not the biological father. Further investigation uncovered that Mr. Woramet was introduced to the Chinese family through a relative of his wife, who is of Chinese descent. He reportedly acted as a 'fake father' for two Chinese families. One family has already been apprehended, while the other reportedly fled the country prior to the arrests. Mr. Woramet's criminal record also indicates multiple previous drug-related charges. The birth registration process for this group of Chinese families began at a hospital in the Rama 9 area before being completed at the Huai Khwang District Office. Following these arrests, the police intend to expand their investigation to determine if any hospital or district office officials were complicit in this scheme.
