Thailand, Malaysia Deepen Border Security and Development Cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR — 7 September 2026, Thailand and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen cooperation on border development, security and the peace dialogue process for Thailand’s southern border provinces, following a meeting between senior officials Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow, held a meeting with the Director-General of Malaysia’s National Security Council in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting followed an earlier discussion between the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Malaysia, with both sides agreed to advance cooperation following the earlier discussion between the Prime Ministers of the two countries. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of the Thai-Malaysian border areas in order to improve the livelihoods and well-being of local communities, as well as to strengthen border security. This includes closer intelligence sharing and coordination on the construction of security fences along the border to prevent transnational crime and other illegal activities. The officials also discussed cooperation on the peace dialogue process for Thailand’s southern border provinces, with Malaysia continuing to serve as facilitator for the talks.
