Negros Occidental Intensifies Biocontrol Efforts Against Sugarcane Pest
Negros Occidental in the Philippines is intensifying biocontrol efforts against the red-striped soft scale insect (RSSI) affecting sugarcane plantations. Pathogenic fungi have been deployed across over 77 hectares to curb the pest's spread.
BACOLOD CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines — Negros Occidental has intensified efforts to contain the spread of red-striped soft scale insects (RSSI) by deploying pathogenic fungi on more than 77 hectares of sugarcane fields affected by low to moderate infestations. Engr. Colen Ocalinas, action officer of the Provincial Biosecurity Task Force, said at a press briefing. The move is part of the province's commitment to minimizing crop damage and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The RSSI, a type of scale insect, feeds on the sap of sugarcane plants, weakening them and potentially leading to reduced yields and lower quality produce. Biocontrol, which uses natural enemies or biological agents to control pests, is seen as a more environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. Negros Occidental is one of the Philippines' major sugarcane-producing provinces, and the widespread infestation of the RSSI could have significant economic implications for the local agricultural sector. The provincial government is continuously monitoring the situation and is prepared to implement additional measures if the infestation spreads further.
