Misinformation Linking VP's Absence to Vlogger's Death Fuels Political Divide

Misinformation is circulating on social media linking Vice President Sara Duterte's overseas trip to the killing of a vlogger, fueling speculation about political rivalries and potential disinformation campaigns. The claim, posted on the Facebook page "Balita at Kaalaman" on July 21, states: "Breaking News: Sara Duterte has left the country after the PNP identified the suspects behind the death of Mima Alicia. Is she afraid that the hitman will point fingers at her? #JusticeForMimaAlicia." The post gained over 4,100 reactions and 1,300 comments as of writing. The claim seems to suggest that the Vice President's travel was connected to the vlogger's death. The vlogger, identified as Alicia Lipata, known online as "Mima Alicia," was killed on July 17 by two motorcycle-riding gunmen outside her home in Caloocan City. Lipata was known for her support of the Marcos administration and her critical stance towards Vice President Duterte and her allies. According to the Office of the Vice President (OVP), Duterte was indeed abroad from July 16 to 31, visiting Qatar, Germany, the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, and the Netherlands. The OVP stated that her trip was for meetings with overseas Filipinos and personal engagements, encompassing both official foreign travel and private matters. They also confirmed that no government funds were used for the duration of her trip. "These activities are intended to engage with overseas Filipinos and advance the Philippines’ interests abroad," the OVP said in a statement on July 21. "The itinerary includes both official foreign travel and personal engagements. No government funds will be used by the Vice President for the entire duration of the trip." This overseas travel coincided with Duterte's ongoing impeachment trial. She faces accusations of misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery of Department of Education officials, and grave threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family, making her the only public official in Philippine history to be impeached twice by the House of Representatives. Regarding Lipata's death, the Northern Police District is investigating the possibility that her killing is linked to her political commentary. On July 23, authorities announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with the murder, who are set to face charges. The motive behind the killing remains under investigation.
