Military vehicle mistaken for civilian car, robbers attack leading to shootout, one officer injured

Ayeyarwaddy Times, July 1. It has been learned that a shootout occurred in Taunggyi, southern Shan State, when a group of robbers mistakenly attacked military personnel from the interim government army who were traveling in a civilian car outside of their duty hours. This incident occurred on the night of June 24, near the Kyaukgyisu ward in Taunggyi city. When a group of robbers, including women, attempted to stop and rob the said vehicle, the military personnel on board the vehicle opened fire with guns. As the robbers retaliated, a military officer of the rank of captain was shot and injured in the arm while driving the car, according to local residents. A local resident told Ayeyarwaddy Times, "It was said that everyone in the car was an officer. The women first stopped the car and tried to rob it as a group. When they fired from inside the car, the robbers also fired back. The captain driving the car was grazed in the arm by a bullet. I heard that the robbers were also injured." It is known that armed group robberies are currently occurring in Taunggyi city, with even fatalities, but the robbers have not been apprehended.
