Australia Reaffirms Development Partnership with Cambodia Ahead of 75th Anniversary

Australia has reaffirmed its long-term development partnership with Cambodia as the two nations prepare to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, pledging deeper cooperation in trade, investment, human capital, and institutional capacity building. The commitment was stated during a meeting on July 30 between Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth and Australia's Minister for International Development, the Hon. Anne Aly. Australian Ambassador Derek Yip also attended. Deputy Prime Minister Pornmoniroth welcomed Minister Aly's visit and lauded Australia's sustained support, which began with its role in Cambodia's peacebuilding and reconciliation following the 1991-1992 Paris Peace Agreements. He noted that since 1992, Australia has provided nearly AUD 2 billion (US$1.3 billion) in grant assistance across sectors such as education, agriculture, social protection, infrastructure, mine clearance, and healthcare. Key support highlighted included initiatives through the Cambodia-Australia Partnership (CAP), such as the CAPRED program, energy crisis response, the ISPH II social protection and health initiative, and technical assistance for the IDPoor system and the Health Equity Fund. Minister Aly reaffirmed Canberra's engagement under Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, stating that future collaboration would align with Cambodia's priorities while strengthening human capital, trade, investment, and people-to-people links. She also expressed gratitude to the Cambodian government for its support of Australian businesses through legal and trade facilitation reforms. Both sides agreed to expand cooperation through sustainable projects linked to Cambodia's 'Vision 2050' and Australia's regional strategy, with priority areas including trade, investment, institutional capacity, and human resource development.
