MFA Prepares Evacuation Plans for Thais Amid Worsening Middle East Conflict

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is preparing evacuation plans for Thai citizens in the Middle East amid escalating tensions in the region, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow. Speaking from the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) in Manila, Philippines, Mr Sihasak stated that the MFA had convened a meeting to monitor and assess the tense situation in the Middle East following the end of a ceasefire and renewed fighting. He confirmed the ministry's readiness for any eventuality, recalling previous successful evacuations of Thais from Iran during past conflicts. "The MFA has to prepare to handle all scenarios and assess our readiness, especially if another evacuation of Thai citizens is necessary. I can confirm that we are prepared for any eventuality," he said. Eksiri Pintaruchi, the MFA's permanent secretary, chaired a meeting on Tuesday via teleconference with representatives from all Thai embassies and consulates in the Middle East. Participants exchanged information on the progress of caring for and assisting Thai nationals in each country and reviewed their readiness to assist and evacuate Thai nationals if the situation changes. Embassies and consulates in the region have advised Thai nationals to closely follow official news and adhere strictly to host country announcements and warnings. Currently, no reports indicate severe impact on Thai nationals in the Middle East due to the conflict. Mr Sihasak also noted that the AMM discussed ASEAN's central role in global peace and security, with Myanmar's situation remaining a concern. Thailand's policy prioritizes dialogue and engagement while upholding ASEAN's five-point consensus. However, Thailand acknowledges its national interests in border security, including border trade, transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, and pollution, necessitating dialogue with the Myanmar government. Thailand has urged Myanmar's new government to continue dialogue for peace and reconciliation and expressed readiness to facilitate talks involving ethnic minorities and the government.
