Durian Farmers Oppose Dam Project in Chanthaburi, Citing Forest Encroachment and Elephant Concerns

In Thailand's eastern province of Chanthaburi, farmers managing extensive durian orchards totaling 287 rai (approximately 46 hectares) have strongly voiced their opposition to a proposed dam construction project on the Khlong Wang Thong stream. The farmers contend that Chanthaburi province does not suffer from chronic water shortages, asserting that the issue stems from an inadequate water resource management system currently in place. Therefore, they argue that the construction of a new dam is not necessarily required. Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the potential for the planned dam construction to lead to further encroachment on existing forest areas. It is pointed out that this could exacerbate the problems already faced by the local community due to damage caused by wild elephants. The issue of elephants entering orchards and damaging crops is a recurring challenge in Thailand's agricultural regions, and deforestation can narrow their habitats, increasing their interaction with humans. This project necessitates careful consideration by the relevant authorities, from the perspective of its impact on the agricultural livelihoods of local residents and environmental conservation.
