Mysterious Roaring Sound Heard in West Java, Residents Anxious; BMKG Unable to Identify Source

A mysterious and unexplained roaring sound has been repeatedly heard in the Bandung and Sumedang regions of West Java, Indonesia, from Friday night (September 4, 2026) into the early hours of Saturday morning (September 5). The phenomenon has caused anxiety among residents, and authorities are investigating its source. Residents in the Sumedang area reported hearing the roaring sound starting around 1:00 AM WIB on September 5. The sound continued intermittently until 6:36 AM, reportedly strong enough to vibrate house doors. One resident expressed concern on social media, writing, "Oh God, protect us." Another resident initially mistook the sound for someone walking on their roof. However, the prolonged duration of the noise led to feelings of unease, with the resident suspecting that something frightening might be happening. Wijayanto, Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), stated that the agency is still investigating the source of the roaring sound. BMKG's monitoring of seismic activity in and around Bandung between 00:00 and 05:00 WIB on September 5 showed no seismic events. An examination of lightning activity also revealed no significant occurrences that would explain the reported sounds.
