33rd Diplomatic Conference: National Interests at Forefront

Vietnam must consistently pursue its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, and diversification and multilateralisation of external relations, while promoting deep, comprehensive and effective international integration to safeguard national interests to the fullest extent. This was strongly emphasized by Vietnamese diplomats at the 33rd Diplomatic Conference held in Hanoi. The conference shared the understanding that diplomacy is evolving from a stage of merely "paving the way" for international relations to one that "creates development resources" for the nation. This suggests that as Vietnam continues its economic growth, diplomacy is being called upon to make more substantial contributions. In particular, for Vietnam under its one-party system, the execution of foreign policy is a crucial tool for maintaining national stability and development, and diversifying external relations is essential for reducing dependence on any single country and managing geopolitical risks. Furthermore, the importance of diplomacy playing a "pioneering role," providing "sound advice," and taking "prompt action" was reiterated by top leadership at the conference. This is interpreted as a message that the diplomatic sector should adopt a more proactive and strategic approach in the rapidly changing international landscape. Remarks by a diplomat regarding the strengthening of Vietnam-Canada ties also drew attention, indicating Vietnam's efforts to explore new economic growth opportunities by deepening relations with Western countries.
