Cagayan de Oro Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue Addresses Pax Silica Concerns

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A multi-stakeholder dialogue was convened here to address growing concerns surrounding the proposed Pax Silica mining project. Organized by the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro-Commission on Social Apostolate and the Samdhana Institute, the full-day event, themed “Opportunities, Risks and Responsibilities for People, Planet and Peace,” brought together members of the community, experts, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and some government representatives at the San Agustin Metropolitan Cathedral. The dialogue focused on the potential impacts of the Pax Silica project, which aims to mine and process silica ore, on the local community and environment. While the project promises economic benefits, significant concerns have been raised regarding potential environmental degradation from large-scale mining, impacts on water resources, and the effects on the livelihoods of local residents. The assembly aimed to foster mutual understanding and promote a more inclusive decision-making process by providing an open forum for discussion between project proponents and concerned parties. Balancing economic development with environmental conservation remains a persistent challenge in the Philippines, with a growing demand for sustainable development that incorporates the voices of local communities, especially in regional development projects.
