Cambodia on Alert as Mekong River Levels Surge Due to Abnormal Regional Storms

Mr. Kim Virak, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), stated that abnormal regional storms occurred consecutively in August 2026, influencing the southwest monsoon and causing heavy rainfall over the upper Mekong River basin and the geographical area of Cambodia. This has led to a sharp rise in the Mekong River's water levels. The water level at the Stung Treng Hydrological Station has reached the alert level, and water levels at stations in Kratie and Kampong Cham provinces are also nearing the alert level. Mr. Virak made these remarks on September 2, 2026, while leading a meeting to review the August work report and set directions for continued implementation in September 2026. The meeting was attended by under-secretaries of state, directors-general, and relevant officials. He further stated that since mid-August, some low-lying areas in Stung Treng, Kratie, Kampong Cham, and Tbong Khmum provinces have gradually experienced flooding, affecting residences, agricultural land, and rural infrastructure. In response to this situation, the NCDM has issued continuous recommendations for flood intervention preparedness. Relevant ministries and institutions have also issued additional recommendations in their specialized fields to reduce flood risks in affected local areas. The NCDM has put in place an action plan to enhance the efficiency of disaster preparedness, response, and post-disaster recovery. The Secretary-General urged the implementation of the action plan and priority measures to strengthen the effectiveness and timeliness of disaster prevention, preparedness, emergency response, and recovery efforts.
