Demonstrators call on Thai authorities to bring up the issue of river pollution with Myanmar junta leader

On August 3, the People’s Network for Protecting the Mekong, Salawak, River, Kong, Salawak, and Kraburi rivers organized a demonstration to express their intention to protect the Mekong, Salawak, River, Kong, Salawak, and Kraburi rivers, according to a statement from Save the Kok River. The gathering was held at Wat Santitham in Chiang Mai Province, before the convoy moved to the Consulate General of the Republic of Myanmar, Chiang Mai Province, to submit a letter demanding that the Myanmar military government accept the problem of mining in the water source area and expedite the resolution of the pollution impact across the border. Sueksakul Kijinuk, a representative of the network, said that this letter was submitted before the meeting between Thailand and Myanmar on August 6-7 to bring the voices of the people affected by the pollution in the Mekong River basin into the negotiation. He also emphasized that the recognition of the actual mining activities as the starting point for solving the problem and that the Thai government should have a role in protecting the interests and safety of the people. The event included symbolic performances, including the delivery of samples of water from the affected areas, and the reading of a statement by Ms. Saengrawee Suwirak, a representative of the network, who stated that millions of people in the Mekong River basin, Saowakaeo, and Khong are being affected by the contaminated toxins from the mining activities in Myanmar, which affect the use of water, agriculture, fisheries, and the quality of life. Before submitting the letter, they passed it through the police authorities to be forwarded to the Myanmar government. The network confirms the demand for the Myanmar military government to acknowledge the facts regarding the mining activities in the Ton Nam area, to cease mining operations that have caused harm, and to promptly implement measures to rectify and restore the ecosystem in a concrete manner.
