PH Seeks US Market Reopening for Blue Swimming Crabs

The Philippines is intensifying government-led efforts to have the US market reopened for its blue swimming crabs, following an import suspension by the US in June. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) are spearheading the appeal to the US for the resumption of imports. According to Rene Parreño, officer-in-charge of BFAR Negros Island Region, preparations are underway to implement new regulations requested by the US. The decision on whether to resume imports is expected to be made after these are finalized. This issue carries significant economic importance for blue swimming crabs, one of the Philippines' key seafood exports. By regaining access to the US market, the Philippines aims to minimize the economic impact on its domestic fishing and related industries, and to maintain or expand export revenues. This appeal is part of the government's diplomatic initiatives to ensure access for Philippine agricultural and aquatic products to international markets. Amidst escalating tensions in the South China Sea, the Philippines faces the necessity of maintaining and strengthening relations with the US, a major trading partner. Facilitating seafood trade is also considered crucial from an economic security perspective.
