Foreigners Arrested After Failed Gold Heist in Central Vietnam

Four foreign nationals have been arrested in the central Vietnamese province of Dak Lak for attempting to steal gold bars from a jewelry store on September 15. The incident highlights ongoing security challenges as Vietnam continues its rapid economic development. The suspects entered the Tien Vien gold shop shortly after it opened around 7 a.m. The shop was empty of customers, and the owner was attending to the suspects. One male suspect engaged the owner in conversation to create a distraction, while a female suspect discreetly approached a gold cabinet. She unlocked it with a key left in the lock and attempted to steal three gold bracelets, valued at approximately $7,700. However, the owner noticed the act and shouted for help, causing the woman to drop the gold beneath the cabinet. The pair then fled to a white getaway car parked across the street, where two accomplices were waiting. The driver immediately sped away. Following an emergency alarm from the shop, local police coordinated with provincial traffic police and the Xuan Loc Commune police. Within an hour of the crime, at approximately 8 a.m., authorities apprehended the two primary suspects and their accomplices along National Highway 1D, about 40 kilometers from the crime scene. The identities of the four individuals have not yet been released, and police are currently taking statements.
