Temporary Traffic Diversion on Lane Xang Road, Vientiane; ASF Outbreak Continues

Motorists in Vientiane Capital are advised to note temporary traffic diversions on Lane Xang Road from September 26–27, 2026. The Vientiane Capital Department of Public Works and Transport issued Notice No. 8626/PWTC.VC on September 23, requesting compliance with temporary arrangements to facilitate road construction work for the Smart Clean-Cooling Road System (CCRS) project. The affected section is the inbound lane from Vientiane High School traffic light to Laos-France Bank traffic light, necessitating road-cutting and pipe-laying. Alternative routes are available for those bypassing the section, including turning right along Vientiane High School’s wall towards Sisavath Road and Sailom Road, or turning left onto the road beside the Vientiane Office towards Nongbone Road. Residents and workers in the area are urged to follow traffic police instructions. Authorities encourage motorists to plan journeys, allow extra travel time, and use alternative routes to reduce congestion. In parallel, the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak continues to be a significant concern, having reached seven provinces and 91 districts across the Lao PDR. While some northern areas show signs of stabilization, the outbreak remains active, causing substantial losses to pig farmers. Authorities are intensifying movement controls and surveillance to contain further spread. Under Laos's one-party system, infrastructure development and public health initiatives are national priorities. However, these efforts are often constrained by economic limitations and inter-regional coordination challenges. Disease control, such as ASF, requires a delicate balance between effective containment and farmer support across a vast territory with limited resources.
