Hanoi Plans 5 New Bridges Over Red River by 2038 to Boost Connectivity

Hanoi City has announced plans to construct five new bridges over the Red River, as part of a broader urban development strategy. The proposed bridges, including Liên Trung, Tàm Xá, Cự Khối, Bát Tràng, and Khuyến Lương, are slated for development between 2026 and 2038 along the Red River's landscape axis. Currently, the Red River has six operational bridges: Thăng Long, Nhật Tân, Long Biên, Chương Dương, Vĩnh Tuy, and Thanh Trì. Additionally, six more bridges are under construction: Hồng Hà, Thượng Cát, Tứ Liên, Trần Hưng Đạo, Ngọc Hồi, and Mễ Sở. With the addition of the five new bridges, the total number of bridges along the Red River landscape axis will reach 17, connecting the Hồng Hà bridge to the Mễ Sở bridge. The plan is part of a proposal to adjust the overall zoning plan for the Red River urban area, with public consultations underway. The study area covers approximately 40 kilometers along the river, encompassing 16 communes and wards. The development of this bridge network aims to create seamless connectivity between road, waterway, and urban rail transport, serving as a catalyst for regional and city-wide development. It is designed to enhance traffic capacity along the Red River and reinforce the role of the landscape axis as one of the capital's nine key development corridors. Specifically, the Liên Trung bridge is planned to connect Ô Diên and Thiên Lộc communes. The Tàm Xá bridge will be situated between the Thăng Long and Nhật Tân bridges. The Cự Khối bridge will link Lĩnh Nam ward with Long Biên district. The Bát Tràng bridge is designated to connect Lĩnh Nam ward with Bát Tràng commune. The Khuyến Lương bridge will establish a link between Hanoi and Hưng Yên province. Regarding the ongoing construction, most sites have handed over the necessary land. However, some challenges remain, such as building demolition and utility relocation for the Tứ Liên and Trần Hưng Đạo bridges. The Thượng Cát bridge requires additional land acquisition, and significant delays in land clearance in Hưng Yên province for the Ngọc Hồi bridge pose a risk to the project's timeline. Construction progress reports indicate that Hồng Hà bridge is 42.6% complete, Mễ Sở bridge is 41.6% complete, Tứ Liên bridge is nearly 15.6% complete, Trần Hưng Đạo bridge is over 30% complete, Ngọc Hồi bridge is 20.7% complete, and Thượng Cát bridge is 14.3% complete.
