DSWD Distributes P410.3M to Sugarcane Farmers Hit by Scale Insects in Negros

BACOLOD CITY — The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Negros Island Region (DSWD-NIR) has distributed P410.28 million in Emergency Cash Transfers (ECT) to 39,847 sugarcane farmers affected by red-striped soft scale insects (RSSI), Regional Director Arwin Razo said Sunday. Razo said more payouts would continue through the end of the year as the agency awaits additional funds. This aid is a direct relief measure for farmers in Negros Island, where the sugarcane industry is a vital pillar of the local economy, who have been impacted by an unexpected pest infestation. Agricultural workers in the Philippines are often vulnerable to natural disasters and pest outbreaks, making such emergency assistance crucial for maintaining their livelihoods and promoting prompt recovery and resumption of production.
