Ancient Tree Falls, Damaging University Parking Lot in Dak Lak

An ancient tree, estimated to be 30 years old, uprooted and fell onto the parking lot and fence of Tay Nguyen University in Dak Lak province, central Vietnam, early on August 1st. University officials reported that at around 5 AM, faculty members playing sports within the campus heard a loud noise. Upon investigation, they discovered a凤凰木 (Phượng) tree, approximately 8 meters tall with a trunk diameter of about 60 cm, had fallen onto the tin roof of the parking lot. The incident damaged a portion of the parking lot roof and the university's fence, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. A university representative stated, "Fortunately, the tree fell early in the morning when the parking area was empty." The fallen tree was located on the sidewalk along Le Duan Street and was under the management of the Ea Kao Commune People's Committee. At the time of the incident, the weather was normal with no rain. Mr. Nguyen Xuan No, Vice Chairman of the Ea Kao Commune People's Committee, explained that initial checks indicated the tree's roots had rotted, causing it to uproot itself. The university has stated it will cover the costs of repairing the damaged parking lot. Following the incident, the responsible tree management unit cut branches and cleared the trunk. In Vietnam, the preservation of urban green spaces has become a growing concern amidst rapid urban development and infrastructure projects in recent years. Ancient and large trees, in particular, are recognized for their aesthetic value and ecological significance, highlighting the need for their protection.
