Thai Authorities Crack Down on Foreigners Illegally Owning Land on Koh Lanta

The Deputy Interior Minister of Thailand has initiated a crackdown on large-scale illegal land ownership by foreigners in Koh Lanta, Krabi province, a popular tourist destination in the south. According to MGR Online (South), the investigation covers over 120 rai (approximately 190,000 square meters) of land, with an estimated value exceeding 2 billion baht (approximately 8 billion JPY). The crackdown is reportedly prompted by suspicions that a single individual established multiple companies to hold vast tracts of land under corporate names. Thailand imposes strict limitations on direct land ownership by foreigners. Typically, foreigners can only hold land through Thai corporations under specific conditions. However, in this case, it is suspected that numerous entities effectively controlled by foreigners were established to circumvent these regulations. Koh Lanta is renowned for its beautiful beaches and natural beauty, attracting numerous foreign tourists and residents. Alongside its popularity, concerns have been rising about soaring property prices and potential loopholes exploited for foreign land ownership. The Ministry of Interior's investigation is seen as a response to these concerns and an effort to ensure strict adherence to Thai land ownership laws and regulations. Authorities plan to conduct a detailed inquiry, and if illegality is confirmed, measures such as land confiscation and penalties will be imposed.
