Cambodia Promotes Greening Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth
Senior Advisor to the King, Men Sam An, led a large-scale tree planting event in Svay Rieng province, emphasizing the dual goals of economic development and environmental protection. She highlighted the importance of afforestation for climate change mitigation, natural disaster resilience, and securing a hopeful future for the next generation.
Cambodia is accelerating efforts to balance economic development with environmental protection. On September 20, 2026, Senior Advisor to the King, Men Sam An, presided over a tree-planting ceremony at the Chheu Khmou Special Economic Zone in Svay Rieng province, where 2,200 saplings were planted. Additionally, 16,000 saplings were distributed to eight districts and towns throughout the province. Svay Rieng Provincial Governor Peng Porsat stated that the tree-planting activity demonstrated the joint commitment of both the state and private sectors to integrate economic, industrial, and investment development with environmental protection. The governor emphasized, "We cannot choose between the economy and the environment. By fostering economic growth without harming the environment, investments can become drivers of sustainable development." Senior Advisor Men Sam An conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Hun Sen (Chairman of the Supreme Privy Council to the King), Madam Bun Rany Hun Sen (President of the Cambodian Red Cross), and Prime Minister Hun Manet and his spouse. She also expressed gratitude to Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth for providing the saplings and to Secretary General of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), Chea Vuthy, for facilitating coordination with Mr. Xinh Bao Gou, Director-General of the Chheu Khmou Special Economic Zone. She further commended the provincial administration, leaders, public officials, relevant agencies, and local residents for their dedication in organizing the tree-planting event. The Senior Advisor stated, "Planting trees and protecting forests is a form of self-help that can help mitigate climate change, ensure safety from natural disasters, and become a hope for future generations." This tree-planting initiative serves as a significant national movement, enhancing green cover in Svay Rieng province and promoting a noble culture in line with national policies aimed at preserving and promoting natural resources sustainably. This initiative highlights Cambodia's commitment to pursuing economic growth while minimizing environmental impact and building a sustainable future. Specifically, demonstrating environmental considerations within Special Economic Zones, which are designed to attract investment, is crucial for gaining the trust of international investors.
