Vietnam Appoints New Party Secretaries for Can Tho, An Giang

The Central Organization Commission of the Communist Party of Vietnam announced on July 25, 2026, the appointment of new Party Secretaries for the key city of Can Tho and An Giang Province. This personnel change is seen as an effort to maintain political stability and strengthen leadership in local administration within Vietnam's one-party system. Do Thanh Binh, born in 1967 in Ca Mau Province, who currently serves as Minister of Home Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Central Organization Commission, has been appointed as the Secretary of the Can Tho Municipal Party Committee for the 2025-2030 tenure. He is expected to lead the development of Can Tho, an economic and social hub in the Mekong Delta, leveraging his experience in central government. Meanwhile, Le Quang Tung, former Secretary of the Can Tho Municipal Party Committee, born in 1971 in Ha Tinh Province, has been appointed as the Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee for the 2025-2030 tenure. Tung has held various positions, including Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Secretary of the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee, Secretary General of the National Assembly, and Chairman of the National Assembly's Office. An Giang Province borders Cambodia and is known for its strong agricultural sector, making his leadership there a point of interest. In Vietnam, the Communist Party leads the political system, and Party Secretaries hold significant authority as the top leaders in their respective localities. These appointments suggest that the Party Central Committee prioritizes stable governance and the promotion of economic growth in these regions.
