Cambodia Seeks Expanded Higher Education and Tech Cooperation with South Korea

His Excellency Khuon Ponroreak, Cambodian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, met with Ms. Cho Sunyoung, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of KwangWoon University, and Dr. Yoon Do Young, President of KwangWoon University, at the university campus in Seoul on September 15, 2026. The meeting focused on expanding cooperation between KwangWoon University and Cambodian higher education institutions. During the discussion, both parties exchanged views on the situation of foreign students, particularly those from Southeast Asian countries, studying in Korea. They agreed that skills in electronic engineering and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are crucial for meeting current and future job market demands and can serve as a foundation for national development. Ms. Cho informed the Ambassador that KwangWoon University is a private institution offering education from primary to university levels, with approximately 2,000 foreign students currently enrolled. While the university has existing cooperative ties with one university in Cambodia, no Cambodian students have yet been sent to study at KwangWoon University. Ambassador Khuon Ponroreak conveyed that many Cambodian students are interested in engineering disciplines and aspire to pursue further studies in Korea. He requested the university to broaden its cooperation with other universities in Cambodia to facilitate a larger number of Cambodian students studying engineering at KwangWoon University. The Ambassador also noted that some members of the Cambodian community in Korea wish to pursue specialized training to change their visa status from E-9 to E-7. He expressed hope that the university would explore the possibility of offering short-term and weekend courses to enable Cambodians residing in Korea to further their education.
