Southern Thailand Violence Escalates Amidst Stalled Peace Talks

Violence in Thailand's southernmost province of Narathiwat has intensified after an attack on a security checkpoint resulted in the deaths of five paramilitary rangers and injuries to two civilians, including a 10-year-old boy. The incident raises concerns over the stalled peace talks with separatist groups. The attack occurred last night at the Buketa Sami municipal checkpoint in Tanyong Mat municipality, Ra-ngae district, operated by Ranger Company 4509. Six assailants, dressed in black, arrived in a black pickup truck and opened fire, hurling pipe bombs at the checkpoint. They fled the scene along Highway 4055. Security forces have cordoned off the area and are collecting forensic evidence. The Forward Command of the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 expressed condolences for the fallen rangers. The incident follows a car bomb explosion at the old Tan Yong Police Station in Mueang District on Tuesday, which authorities believe was carried out by militants aiming to sow unrest. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reaffirmed his government's commitment to continuing peace talks with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the main separatist group, facilitated by Malaysia. He discussed this intention with his Malaysian counterpart during a recent visit. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of intelligence gathering and implementing effective safety measures in the restive southern provinces, granting full authority to the military for maintaining peace and order. However, peace talks have been stalled since mid-2023. Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the People’s Party, condemned the violence, stating that it cannot resolve the conflict. He urged the government to expedite arrests, prosecutions, and compensation for victims. He also emphasized the need to rebuild trust with the local population through mechanisms like the Southern Border Provinces Peace Dialogue Committee.
