Ho Chi Minh City – Tran Quang Thang, a former student of the Specialized Biology class at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, has achieved a perfect score of 30/30 in the national high school graduation exam this year. He scored 10 in Math, Chemistry, and Biology, and 8 in Literature, making him one of the top scorers nationwide. Thang opted to take the exam to gauge his academic capabilities, even after securing an early admission spot to university due to his national award. "The Literature score surprised me the most. I only aimed for a passing grade in this subject," Thang shared. He admitted that Literature was not his strong suit and he hadn't dedicated extensive study time to it, relying primarily on classroom instruction. Conversely, he felt confident about the B00 combination (Math, Chemistry, Biology). His strong background in Biology, evidenced by a second prize in the national competition and a first prize at the city level, made it a straightforward subject for him. In Math, he completed the entire exam within 30 minutes of the 90-minute allotted time. For Chemistry, he finished just as the time was about to expire. With a guaranteed university spot from his national award, Thang approached the graduation exam with a relaxed mindset. Outside of class, he dedicated 1-2 hours daily to self-study and practice tests. He received support from his Chemistry teachers, Do Huu Nhan and Do Hoang Phuc, to reinforce knowledge, especially after focusing heavily on Biology for the national competition. "I prioritize my own comfort. I set goals and try my best, wanting to see if my learning methods and abilities can make me a top scorer," Thang stated. "But I wasn't under pressure to achieve it at all costs." Daily, Thang solved 1-2 practice tests, emphasizing the thinking process behind each problem rather than just the result. He followed the principle of "quality over quantity," focusing on understanding the essence of problems for optimal results instead of rote memorization and excessive practice. Thang's preferred study time was after 10 PM, lasting about two hours, during which he felt he could concentrate best without distractions. Before that, he allocated time for personal activities and entertainment. Although he once considered pursuing Medicine, Thang plans to enroll in the Biology Education program at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, despite being among the top three scorers nationwide in the B00 combination. This decision was influenced by his inspiring teachers at Le Hong Phong High School, whom he wishes to emulate by becoming a teacher and returning to his alma mater. Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuy, Thang's homeroom teacher and Biology instructor, described him with "admiration." She noted that students in national competition teams often specialize in certain subjects and dedicate significant time from the summer before 11th grade to mid-12th grade for preparation. Consequently, they often struggle to catch up in other subjects for the graduation exam. "But Thang is an exception. He is intelligent, grasps concepts very quickly, and solves problems rapidly," Ms. Thuy said. "If given 10 problems in an hour, Thang usually takes only about 35-40 minutes."
