Myanmar President Visits Cambodia as Leaders Pledge to Strengthen 70-Year Ties

PHNOM PENH, Sept 11, 2026 (KPT) — Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing has begun a two‑day state visit to Cambodia, with both sides pledging to deepen diplomatic and economic cooperation as they mark seven decades of relations. Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen welcomed the Myanmar leader on his arrival in Phnom Penh before holding bilateral talks at the Solidarity Palace. The visit runs from September 11 to 12 at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni. Cambodian Senate spokesman Chea Thyrith said the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties, expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest and exchanging views on regional issues. Samdech Techo Hun Sen described the visit as an important milestone in relations, noting that ties between Phnom Penh and Naypyidaw had remained stable and resilient over the past seventy years. Thyrith said President Min Aung Hlaing praised Cambodia’s development across multiple sectors and expressed a commitment to broaden cooperation in the economy, politics, culture and people‑to‑people exchanges. Both sides agreed to enhance political cooperation, including stronger links between government institutions and parliaments. The Myanmar president is also scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Hun Manet and meet other senior Cambodian leaders. Officials said the meetings would focus on ways to deepen bilateral relations and expand cooperation, while also providing an opportunity to exchange views on regional and international developments. During his visit, Min Aung Hlaing will lay wreaths at Cambodia’s Independence Monument and at the Royal Statue of former King Norodom Sihanouk, the late King‑Father of Cambodia. Officials said the state visit underscores both countries’ commitment to strengthening ties and expanding cooperation across economic, political and cultural fields, while reinforcing their shared interest in peace, stability and regional dialogue.
