Six prosecuted for selling over 250 tons of diseased pigs

Six individuals have been prosecuted in Vietnam's central Quang Tri province for the illegal sale of over 250 tons of pigs infected with African Swine Fever (ASF). On July 19, Quang Tri Provincial Police announced the detention of Mai Van Quang and Ha Van Nghia (both residing in Thanh Hoa province), and Tran Thi Ngoc Hien on charges of violating regulations on food safety under Article 317 of the Penal Code. In connection with the case, Hoang Thi Mong Truyen, Truong Van Quoc, and Tran Ngoc Bac (all residing in Quang Tri province) have been prosecuted and are currently out on bail. Previously, the Economic Police had detected a network specializing in purchasing pigs infected with ASF from northern provinces and bringing them to Quang Tri for slaughter and sale. These pigs were allegedly bought at low prices due to their illness. Authorities apprehended the group red-handed as they were transferring diseased pigs from a specialized truck with a Hung Yen license plate to smaller trucks in the vicinity of the old Dong Ha City Public Cemetery and the Quan Ngan Industrial Zone. Authorities allege that from February to May 2026, the defendants sold over 250 tons of pigs infected with ASF. These pigs were purchased cheaply due to their illness, then transported to Quang Tri for slaughter and sale to gain illicit profits. The case is currently under expanded investigation.
