Biodiversity Key to Indonesia's Long-Term Economic Growth: Bappenas

The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) has stated that biodiversity conservation is key to Indonesia's long-term economic growth. The agency aims to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the protection and sustainable utilization of natural capital. Erna Sariena, Deputy for Environment and Natural Resources at Bappenas, pointed out that biodiversity forms the basis of economic activities. She explained that ecosystem services not only support Indonesia's key industries such as agriculture, fisheries, and tourism but also create new opportunities for future economic growth. To mitigate the risks posed by biodiversity loss to the economy, the agency will promote environmentally friendly policy planning and implementation. This includes strengthening the management of national parks, curbing deforestation, and promoting sustainable land use. Bappenas also plans to enhance international cooperation regarding the valuation and utilization of biological resources. Erna emphasized that biodiversity conservation is not merely an environmental issue but a critical component of economic development.
