VNeID App Adds Overnight Stay Declaration; Convenience Boosted, Privacy Concerns Raised

Vietnam's national identification app, VNeID, has introduced a new feature that allows users to declare overnight stays at accommodation facilities. This development is seen as a move to enhance administrative efficiency and better track citizens' movements and residency status. Previously, regulations regarding the declaration of stays existed, particularly for foreigners and domestic residency registration. The integration into the VNeID app aims to simplify these procedures, potentially easing the burden on both citizens and accommodation providers. For instance, hotels and guesthouses might be able to register guest information more swiftly through the app, streamlining their reporting to authorities. However, this expansion of the app's functionality also raises concerns about the scope of personal data collection. VNeID already holds a wide array of personal information, including names, dates of birth, addresses, facial images, and fingerprints. The addition of accommodation data means the government could gain access to detailed information about individuals' travel patterns and whereabouts. While the government may argue that this feature enhances public safety and aids in crime prevention, questions remain about data management, transparency, and the potential for misuse.
