Cambodia Accelerates National Development Strategy Towards 2050, Promoting Research and Innovation with Public-Private Collaboration

Cambodian Senate's Second Vice President, Dr. Thoun Vathana, has strongly urged the promotion of research and innovation to support the nation's development towards 2050. During a monthly meeting held on July 27, 2026, Dr. Vathana called on officials to foster a spirit of teamwork, initiative, and research, focusing on key national sectors. This directive aims to enhance the quality of work and provide essential input for policy formulation and national development, particularly in the agriculture, industry, and service sectors. It aligns with the high recommendations of Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who has stressed the importance of long-term vision in policy implementation to escape the middle-income trap and achieve the goal of Cambodia becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050. Dr. Vathana also highlighted Cambodia's economic progress over the past two decades, noting the significant contribution of the financial sector in expanding access to finance for citizens and businesses. He encouraged the working groups to continue researching and finding solutions to challenges within this sector to bolster its stability and resilience. During the meeting, progress on preparations for a workshop titled "Cambodia's Economic Situation and the Path Towards 2050" was also reviewed. Scheduled for August 3, 2026, the workshop is expected to gather over 270 participants, including senators, members of parliament, policymakers, researchers, development partners, and private sector representatives, for discussions and exchange of views on Cambodia's economic landscape and its future trajectory.
