PCG Foils P7.38 Million Cigarette Smuggling Attempt in Davao del Sur

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) yesterday foiled an attempt to smuggle P7.38 million worth of cigarettes into Davao del Sur. During the operation, PCG units patrolling off the coast of Davao Oriental spotted a vessel with suspicious cargo near Port of Davao and conducted an inspection. Numerous packages of cigarettes were discovered, leading to their confiscation as smuggled goods. Concurrently, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported its own successes in combating contraband, seizing P14.08 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in Zamboanga City and another P11.1 million worth in Palawan. These seizures are part of ongoing nationwide efforts to curb the flow of illegal items. These smuggled cigarettes not only undermine domestic tax revenues but also pose potential public health risks, as they may be counterfeit. The government, in coordination with customs and law enforcement agencies, is intensifying border control measures and targeting smuggling syndicates. Cigarette smuggling from abroad has been a persistent challenge in the Philippines, with frequent seizures occurring in areas along the South China Sea and in the archipelagic regions with extensive coastlines. The coordinated enforcement actions by the PCG and PNP underscore a firm stance against such illicit activities.
