Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday challenged the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to continue its probe into alleged anomalies in the bidding and funding of the projects for the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. Cayetano stated that if there were indeed irregularities behind the successful hosting where the Philippines emerged as overall champion and was looked up to by the entire Southeast Asia, these should be thoroughly investigated. "Our proposal to the NBI, Malacañang, and the DOJ is this—investigate the Southeast Asian Games of 2019, where we were overall champions and admired by the whole of Southeast Asia, investigate it thoroughly, give everything," Cayetano said on Facebook Live. Furthermore, Cayetano announced that he and his colleagues in the minority bloc would resume their investigation into the massive flood control corruption scandal. This suggests a potential linkage between the SEA Games anomaly probe and the flood control probe, as he posed the question, "What? Deal?" He added, "So, I, along with my colleagues who are now in the minority, will investigate the flood control. What? Deal?" NBI Director Melvin Matibag had earlier said he would create a task force to investigate alleged anomalies in the 2019 SEA Games, citing "new information and documents" the bureau recently received involving the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC). Cayetano was the chairperson of PHISGOC in 2019. In response, the senator-judge made a manifestation during the sixth day of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, questioning whether Matibag's remarks were meant to intimidate him. "It’s not easy. We are only 24. We have lost three senators already. So I hope this issue of the integrity of the court becomes an issue for all of us," Cayetano said. He further added, repeating his earlier statement when he was Senate President, "Director, you failed to break us. So, don’t try to break this representation or this impeachment court because what you’re doing is not helping." Matibag is set to be presented by the House prosecution panel as a witness in Duterte’s trial, testifying on Article IV of the Articles of Impeachment, detailing the supposed grave threat and assassination plot against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez.
