Vietnam, Laos Agree to Enhance Comprehensive Defense Cooperation

Vietnam and Laos have agreed to further strengthen comprehensive cooperation in defense, building on the special relationship between the two countries. Vietnam's Minister of National Defense stressed that Vietnam always treasures and continuously promotes its special, loyal, and enduring relations with Laos. He added that the recent elevation of bilateral ties to "great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation, and strategic cohesion" has opened a new chapter in the special Vietnam-Laos relationship. This agreement signifies the intention of both nations to further expand and deepen their already strengthened cooperation in areas such as political theory, training, military medicine, and Party theoretical work, extending it across the defense sector. This move is part of Vietnam's efforts to reinforce ties with its neighboring country under its one-party system, which is also crucial from the perspective of maintaining regional influence and ensuring security. Particularly, amidst the complex relationship with China, Vietnam's close coordination with Laos suggests an intention to maintain geopolitical balance. Both countries have agreed to address common challenges and contribute to regional and global peace, stability, and development, with the enhanced defense cooperation being a concrete manifestation of this commitment.
