Nestlé Invests Billions in Thai Pet Food Production, Boosting Exports
Nestlé is investing over 6.4 billion baht in pet food production in Rayong, Thailand, to expand its capacity and serve major export markets including the US and Japan, enhancing the country's food manufacturing and export capabilities.
Food giant Nestlé is set to invest over 6.4 billion baht to expand its pet food production capacity at the Amatacity Rayong Industrial Estate in eastern Thailand. The investment aims to meet growing global demand for pet food. The Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) has approved investment promotion for two Nestlé (Thai) projects: approximately 4.5 billion baht for pet food manufacturing and 1.93 billion baht for pet treats. More than 90% of the production from these projects is slated for export to major markets, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Thailand is the world's second-largest exporter of pet food after Germany, with the industry experiencing an annual growth of over 8%. Nestlé's latest investment is expected to further solidify Thailand's position in this expanding market. A significant aspect of these new projects is the sourcing of over 450 million baht worth of locally produced raw materials annually. Pet food for brands like Felix, Pro Plan, and Friskies will incorporate domestic inputs such as chicken, sardines, vegetables, oils, vitamins, and minerals. Pet treats for Purina One and Felix will utilize approximately 88% Thai-sourced materials, including chicken, sugar, and tapioca starch. This substantial investment in the pet food sector follows Nestlé's announcement in July of a more than 23 billion baht plan to build a new coffee manufacturing plant. Consequently, Nestlé's total new investment in Thailand by 2026 is projected to exceed 29 billion baht. These coffee and pet food ventures are anticipated to significantly boost local agricultural product demand by purchasing over 4.7 billion baht in Thai agricultural materials annually, thereby enhancing Thailand's food manufacturing and export capabilities.
