General Motors (GM) is reportedly considering launching the Wuling Bingo Pro, a small electric vehicle (EV) manufactured by China's SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), under the Chevrolet brand in emerging markets across Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa, according to automotive specialist outlet GM Authority. This business model is expected to be implemented through a licensing agreement with SGMW, a joint venture between GM and SAIC. GM is reportedly exploring the distribution of the Bingo Pro, branded as Chevrolet, in new markets such as Mexico and Brazil. The move aims to address the growing demand for zero-emission compact vehicles in developing countries and densely populated urban areas across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. In these regions, small cars are often the primary choice for younger consumers and hold a significant market share. If the project is approved, the revamped Bingo Pro would become Chevrolet's first all-electric hatchback in these markets. The Wuling Bingo series first debuted in the Chinese market in March 2023, targeting the affordable EV segment. The Bingo Pro variant began sales in May this year, offering two range options under the CLTC standard: 330 km and 403 km. Its price ranges from 56,800 to 70,800 yuan (approximately $8,390 to $10,450 USD). The Bingo Pro is equipped with an 87-horsepower electric motor on the front axle and features an LFP battery. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the Bingo Pro recorded sales of 21,085 units in June. This is not the first time GM has adopted such a strategy. Previously, GM launched the Chevrolet Spark EUV (based on the Baojun Yep Plus) and the Captiva EV (developed from the Wuling Starlight S). Similar to its predecessors, the Chevrolet version of the Bingo Pro is expected to undergo minor exterior tweaks and be introduced with a new name. In the Vietnamese context, GM's potential move highlights the intensifying global competition in the automotive sector and the increasing focus on emerging markets, particularly in the EV domain. The Vietnamese government is also promoting EV adoption, and such global trends could influence the Vietnamese market in the future.
