Mother Arrested for Abandoning Infant in Phnom Penh Trash Bin; Child Protection Issues Highlighted

A tragic incident of a newborn infant being abandoned in a trash bin has occurred in Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh. Local police have announced the arrest of the 19-year-old mother in connection with the case. The incident took place on the night of September 12th in the Chaktomuk area. Following a report from residents, investigators from the Don Penh District Police Inspectorate rushed to the scene and discovered the infant. Subsequently, the police initiated a swift investigation under the guidance of relevant departments. On the morning of September 13th, based on the orders of Lieutenant General Chhoun Narith, Commissioner General of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police, the investigation team from the Don Penh District Police Inspectorate identified and apprehended the infant's mother, Mao Chanry, a 19-year-old Khmer woman. She was taken to the Chaktomuk District Police Station for questioning. Following the questioning, the police transferred Mao Chanry to the Phnom Penh Municipal Police's Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department, which also handles gender issues, to proceed with legal procedures. This department specializes in protecting the rights of minors and supporting individuals in vulnerable social positions. This incident points to deep-rooted issues within Cambodian society, including poverty, unmarried teenage pregnancies, and a lack of adequate support systems. The abandonment of the infant suggests the mother may have been in an extremely difficult situation, underscoring the urgent need for societal support measures.
